Frequently Asked Questions

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the insertion of fine sterile needles into a point that consists of a high concentration of mast cells, lymphatic vessels and capillaries. The body is able to regulate a response by sending a signal to the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal system that creates interactions between the brain, hormones, and different glands. The various feedback loops that occur are what allows the body to heal itself. This form of medicine has been around for thousands of years and continues to show incredible results. It has been recognized by the World Health Organization for many conditions including pain, digestive issues, diabetes, respiratory issues and many more.

What does acupuncture treat?

I think the better question is what does acupuncture not treat? The World Health Organization has recognized acupuncture in treating a wide range of conditions including:

Digestive: Abdominal pain, Constipation, Diarrhea, Hyperacidity, Indigestion

Emotional: Anxiety, Depression, Insomnia, Nervousness, Neurosis

Eye-Ear-Nose-Throat: Poor vision, Tinnitis, Toothache, TMJ, Sinusitis

Gynecological: Infertility, Menopause symptoms, PMS

Musculoskeletal: Arthritis, Muscle cramping, Muscle pain & weakness, Neck & Back pain

Neurological: Headaches, Migraines, Parkinson’s disease, Postoperative pain, Sciatica pain, Stroke

Respiratory: Asthma, Bronchitis, Common cold, Smoking cessation

Others: Addiction, Chronic fatigue, Immune system problems, Pain control (acute and chronic)

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture is the insertion of thin filiform needles. It is not the same hallow needle used when getting a vaccine or blood drawn at the doctor’s office; About 20 acupuncture needles can fit inside of an injection needle. Most patients don’t feel the needle going in, and some describe it as a little prick, slight pressure, electrical stimulation or a dull achy sensation that is relieved within seconds. Most find treatments very relaxing and fall asleep on the table.

Is acupuncture safe?

When acupuncture is administered by a qualified professional, it is extremely safe. A four year program consisting of 3,500 hours of education including 1,000 hours of clinical practice, clean needle technique, depth and angle of insertion, along with the study of location of vital organs and anatomical structures. Needles are extremely thin, sterile, and disposable for one-time use only. It is a great alternative method of treatment that has proven itself safe and effective over the course of centuries.

How many treatments will I need?

What makes this type of medicine most unique is that it focuses on individual care. Everyone responds differently. Some feel drastic relief within the first treatment, while others may need a few treatments or maintenance to feel relief. The number of treatments depends on the severity and duration of the condition. On average 6-8 treatments given can show the greatest improvements along with home care including dietary modifications, herbal prescriptions, and suggested movement.

What should I expect for my first appointment?

The first session of acupuncture usually takes 90 minutes with the follow up treatments taking 60 minutes. You will be asked a series of questions in your initial interview including diet, lifestyle, emotions, and specifics on your major complaint. The tongue, pulse, palpation of the abdomen, along with range of motion tests can be performed to get a better understanding of your individual pattern. Your practitioner will discuss a treatment plan and protocols including cupping, guasha, bodywork, herbal medicine, and lifestyle adjustments needed to better help your situation. You will also receive your first treatment.
